Consolidation

Mass media is communication—whether written, broadcast, or spoken—that reaches a large audience. This includes television, radio, advertising, movies, the Internet, newspapers, magazines, and so forth. Mass media is a significant force in modern culture, particularly in America. Sociologists refer to this as a mediated culture where media reflects and creates the culture. Communities and individuals are bombarded constantly with messages from a multitude of sources including TV, billboards, and magazines, to name a few. These messages promote not only products, but moods, attitudes, and a sense of what is and is not important. Mass media makes possible the concept of celebrity: without the ability of movies, magazines, and news media to reach across thousands of miles, people could not become famous. In fact, only political and business leaders, as well as the few notorious outlaws, were famous in the past. Only in recent times have actors, singers, and other social elites become cele...

Print Ad Analysis

First of all, the overall component parts of the advertisement is Katy Perry dressed as a vampire appearing rather tempted to bite a bag of chips. There is no scenery, and the image itself is rather flat, all in effort to not draw any attention away from Perry and her bag of "PopChips". The advertisers had assured that Katy Perry was well lit (especially her face to capture her pale skin to further the "vampire costume"), yet also to assure the white of the chips bag really stands out against its bag. As with the tones, the colours of Perry are neutral so in her clothing and hair so that the audience's attention is mainly brought to her face (to notice the vampire teeth) and the bag of chips of which was purposefully placed close to the bag so the title "Bite Me" would make sense. This message is even further expressed as the advertisers use the colour red as the background not just to match the chip bag, but also remind the viewer of blood (a...

Pitch Reflection

In our pitch, we primarily used the appeal to affiliation, to achieve and to prominence, We figured that these were the most appropriate considering the demographics valued and associated acquiring those valued aspects with consuming organic food. With the rich mums of Manhattan, we created an affiliation with clear, wrinkles-less skin and eating organic food from this grocery store. Achieving could be used with all of our target audiences because the majority of people throughout New York were there to succeed in their given career path. Succeeding could only come through organic food which would make the audience more attracted to the product. The appeal for prominence followed a similar principle with wanting to stand out in such a successful city of people however especially for the white mums who wanted to climb the social ladder.   The persuasive techniques that we used in our 24h organic grocery store in new york campaign were association, plain folks, bandwagon, flatte...

Target Audience in Media

In this advertisement the target audience is men who work out and are into body building. It targets the appeal to achieve as the advertisement is about using a protein shake to build lean muscles. The advertisement includes motivational and dominating language which men tend to find more persuasive as they're the ones who most of the time want to feel strong and in charge. In addition, the advertisement includes a hyperbolic picture of a very muscular man dangling off a cliff with one hand drinking the shake. Next to him there's a clear sign saying "Milk for real men". That use of competitive language again emphasizes the target audience of men who work out. The advertisements uses Logos as it includes a lot of factual information on the bottom left of the image as well as on the bottom right. Pathos can also be identified as they used a strong muscular man hanging off a cliff which can evoke the feeling of envy and motivate a person to drink the shake so that they ...

The Stereotypes Of Non-Native English Speakers

In my opinion, associating a person based on the way they speak English to a specific stereotype is wrong and just plain rude yet people don't realize they do it everyday. Whether it's a conscious decision or not, people tend to associate a specific ethnicity group to a stereotype instantly based on the way they speak.   The world is beginning to be exposed to an array of different languages resulting in diverse accents. In the world today, it is believed that there are 7,099 languages that are still expressed. Although English is the lingua franca of the world, there needs to be acknowledgement that English is not the only language spoken. It is estimated that 1.5 billion people speak English. When you think of 1.5 billion people, you think that's quite a lot right? But do you know how many are actually native speakers? Only 360 million out of those 1.5 billion. That isn't even half of the percentage of non-native speakers. So why is it that we associa...

Analyzing Tupac's song "Changes"

In Tupac's song "Changes", the singer/songwriter addresses a variety of social, economical, and political issues in the African American community such as the obligation to make money by stealing or selling "dope", the substance usage, police brutality, racism, etc. illustrating the need for a change of power, prejudice and security within the community. In the song, the songwriter mentions the struggle of being a person of color. In the third and fourth line of the song, "Is life worth living? Should I blast myself? I'm tired of being poor and even worse black.", the writer presents the internal conflict of whether or not being dead is better than being alive and black. Already the reader gains a feeling of   As the reader goes down the song lyrics, the songwriter mentions, "Cops give a damn about a negro? Pull the trigger, kill a ni**a, he's a hero". He also continues to mention more about how police brutality such as "the ...

Letter to the editor - Laura Clark

Laura Clark, the fact that the article "Twtr? It's majorly bad! Leading headteacher condemns 'text speak' for eroding schoolchildren's language skills" was even posted makes me astonished. Points that were created in this argument are put out of context and shouldn't even have been made in the first place. Blaming social media for the way that children are speaking is outrageous. You go and say that "a generation of children are leaving school without a proper grasp of spelling and grammar because of text speak" where in reality people have always claimed that children haven't grasped spelling and grammar since the beginning of time! Has social media been around since the beginning of time? No, I didn't think so. Now that you've found a so called reason to blame for this so called "problem", you go ahead and use it. This article from the title "Twtr? It's majorly bad!" to the phrases "textspeak is ero...

MLK's Speech

Martin Luther King's influential and motivational speech of " I have a Dream" encouraged the citizens of white dominated United States to stand up and come together for African American rights. The target audience of MLK's speech was obviously for the nation of the US as in context, it was the time when civil rights movements were taking place and people were fighting for what they believed in, specifically in ending racism in the US. In MLK's speech, to emphasize his purpose a lot of anaphora can be found throughout the speech. He used a lot of repetition of "key" words that meant something powerful towards the purpose of the speech. The repetition of phrases such as "freedom", "nation", "justice", and "dream" all allow for the reader to remember what his message is and to emphasize how important the theme of "a dream for the freedom of the nation" is. More anaphora that can be seen in the speech ...

Stereotypes in Advertising

Advertisements that have gender stereotypes have been around for a long time. It's usually seen in really old ads but as time has progressed, they're still a successful way to persuade audiences to buy their product. Women stereotyping is seen in so many different types of advertisements, especially in cleaning products. In all 3 of these advertisements for cleaning products, women are portrayed as the ones cleaning. The first two images have the women posing and smiling to advertise the product while the 3rd one shows a woman posing natural and candid. The way that the women are portrayed in these ads, especially the Swiffer one where it's supposed to look like it's candid, can implement to people that this is what woman's jobs are. In the 3rd ad, a guy can be seen in the back on his computer and the woman in the front cleaning can indicate the educational advantage that guys have over girls and the stereotype of women not having jobs. All advertisemen...

Do advertisers have a moral duty to avoid stereotyping people?

Stereotypes have been continously incorporated into advertisements since they have come around. Stereotyping in advertising can be as a result of humerous purposes, for the advertisers feeling or to bring a purpose or attention to a given product. However stereotyping people has been a problem that has been ongoing especially as we have industrialized and evolved. In the past times, women were depicted very bluntly as cleaners or kitchen workers, men were the breadwinners, coloured people were hard laborers. buisness people were light skinned, pink was for girls and boys liked blue. In the current times, advertisers still incorporate these exact same stereotypyes however they are more in the hidden messages that have negative connotations to them. Role product congruity, objectification and decorative advertising are depicted throughout all of our advertising and it is rare to see one without it.   The use of beautiful people in advertisements is a type of stereoty...
